Biblical Wellness: Herbs, Supplements, Inflammation, and Natural Healing
Speaker 1 00:00:00 We're going to start with a disclaimer. Hey friends and family. I am not a physician. I am not prescribing you anything. This information is information I've used in my life and seen and felt the results and benefits of okay. Be aware that these herbs and supplements may not go well with any prescription medicines you are taking. Talk to your primary care physician. Talk to your pharmacist. I cannot tell you what to take because I do not know your specific medical concerns. Okay. Alright, now that we got that out the way, let me tell you about what I've learned. Hey, baby. Guess what? Today's episode is on herbal herbs and supplements that support your body. Let me be very clear. The things God ordained, created, and blessed us to have and use are amazing, and part of the things he gave us was plants. Oh my God. If you're a gardener, you're probably having a great time in your head right now. I just started a garden last year and I had a little herbal garden on my deck.
Speaker 1 00:01:24 It was a little raised herbal garden, and the best thing in the world was going outside to get rosemary whenever I wanted it for cooking. Okay, but there's so many other benefits of herbs. I am not going to cover all the herbs I've experienced. I'm not going to cover every condition. Okay, this is just a little a little snack, right? If you're more interested in herbs and supplements and their benefits, I would love for you to ask some questions. I would love for you to send me an email. I would love for you. Those of you who have my phone number, feel free to shoot a text or make a phone call. Okay, this is a quick dive. This is not a deep dive. All right. We're actually going to start with some Bible for you. All right. We're going to start with Genesis one verse 29 actually. We're going to start with verse 28. Okay. Then God blessed them and said, be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it.
Speaker 1 00:02:30 Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground. Then God said, look, I have given you every seed bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, The birds in the sky. The small animals that scurry along the ground. Everything that has life. And that is what happened. And God looked over all he made. And he saw that it was very good in the evening past. And the morning came and marked the sixth day. Why am I using Genesis one and 29 as my focus verse? Because he told us that the plants and the fruit trees were for our food. Food is nutritional, right? Like it's supposed to be. Anyway, that's why we eat. Okay, cool, cool. Next verse is coming from Ezekiel 47. And I'm only going to read verse 12 here. And it reads, fruit trees of all kinds will grow along both sides of the river.
Speaker 1 00:03:54 The leaves of these trees will never turn brown and fall. And there will always be fruit on their branches. There will be a new crop every month. For they are awarded by the river flowing from the temple. The fruit will be your food and the leaves for healing. Okay, so I gave you the scripture. But what does it mean? We are focusing on health through a biblical lens, right? I want you to take away from this that we have been gifted beautiful things by God. And here's how we apply it. The hardest part of holistic wellness is also recognizing that the thing we're using only has power because God gave it power. Right. So at no point are we so wrapped up in these herbs, in these supplements that we forget that without God, nothing is possible, right? So let's tap into some herbs and some wellness together. Let's talk about some key terms. There are different types of inflammation. So we have acute inflammation which would be something like rolling your ankle or overworking a muscle in the gym.
Speaker 1 00:05:22 Right. A muscle strain something where it just happened today. If I go to sleep, give it a day or two, it's probably going to resolve itself. And then there's chronic inflammation or inflammatory diseases. many autoimmune diseases cause inflammation of some sort. Some of them cause inflammation in the joints, some cause inflammation in the skin, and others affect your nerves or other soft tissues in the body. Right. And then we're going to talk about antioxidants. Those are things that help to reduce or neutralize the free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals are those things that lead to inflammation, chronic disease, or damage to cells. so those are things like alcohol and the gas that we put in our cars when it comes out of our exhaust pipes. the things that most of us can't escape because of our environment can cause damage to our bodies. And then we have analgesics. Analgesics are things that reduce pain, right? So not everything reduces pain. Some things will reduce the inflammation, which may in turn help with pain.
Speaker 1 00:06:51 While some things are focused on reducing pain. Okay, so now that we have a little bit of a base for the information, let's talk about some herbs. Okay. Rosemary and thyme I know I mentioned it earlier together or separate have some amazing anti-inflammatory effects. They also have some antioxidant effects. So these are things that I like to put in my tea blends like peppermint, which also, helps with digestion and to some degree can relieve some internal discomfort. ginger and lemon can also help reduce your bloating or your gut inflammation. sometimes our bodies just have some backed up stuff from the meals that we've eaten where our bodies have not eliminated all of the waste. Right. So having herbs that help your body flush out, reduce, remove these pieces of waste, these toxins can give you the jumpstart you didn't know you needed. Right? things like turmeric and black pepper. Turmeric specifically helps reduce inflammation. And its or one of its favorite buddies is black pepper. Black pepper helps to increase the body's absorption of the chemicals or the compounds that things in turmeric that make it help reduce inflammation.
Speaker 1 00:08:39 Right. So if you have them together, you've increased the ability to reduce inflammation. And if you throw in a healthy fat like an avocado or a handful of cashews. You've just tripled down on the effects of that turmeric and the reducing of inflammation or swelling. one of my favorite, because, I mean, you know, I'm I'm a female, I have periods, I have a menstrual cycle. As fun and uncomfortable as it can be. We bless the creator. We bless God that our bodies work properly and we experience these things. a combination that I have found that has relieved my cramps immensely is red raspberry leaf. Peppermint leaf. Some ginger and some cinnamon. Okay. Those things hope they support our bodies in reducing inflammation while also reducing pain. Like the combinations we need to function, right? and then for muscle cramps, baby. Here's what. Here's what you need to know. Potassium and magnesium. These are two of the vital parts of muscle function. there are a lot of things.
Speaker 1 00:10:11 Okay. Sodium is one of them. Most of us have enough sodium in our bodies, if not too much. Right. Potassium and magnesium are vital for proper muscle function. If you don't have enough. Mind you, these are supplements, not herbs. you may be experiencing more cramping in your muscles. And sometimes my panel will come back. Or my panel has in the past come back where those levels are perfect, but I'm still having cramps. So I started taking the two together. Or cramps where I'm not waking up with cramps no more. Now you can also add in a vitamin B complex. Why? Because vitamin B, also important for muscle function, helps support nerve function. Now the reason we're saying a vitamin B complex and not just B6 or B12, is because a vitamin B complex has a laundry list of things in it that support muscle function and nerve function. All of the benefits are necessary for us to be our best selves. Okay, now you're saying I don't have muscle cramps? Why do I? Is it something that could still help? It might.
Speaker 1 00:11:34 It might just, A lot of us don't have enough vital nutrients in our body or minerals in our body. And so we feel the fatigue. Vitamin D. Okay. You're tired. Vitamin D and some B6, B12, or B complex. Suddenly you feel like you had a cup of coffee or some green tea. Whichever one is your fancy. me rephrase that. Suddenly, I. So trying these things out and seeing how they benefit your body, how they feel in your body. Once you've consulted your primary care physician and or your pharmacist. Okay. can have a huge benefit. Now, I know you're thinking, herbs. I don't want to deal with it. Okay? All of the things that support your body can also support your brain, right? So we are checking in and making sure that we're getting enough magnesium. Magnesium helps support a healthy sleep cycle. So we've talked about bloating or gut health. Okay. We've talked about the aches and pains of life. Now, a lot of the things that support gut health also help reduce inflammation.
Speaker 1 00:13:03 A lot of the things that support your inflammation also can benefit you as far as reducing pain. There's a beautiful play between the herbs that support your body, incorporating a herbal blend or a vitamin to help address the issue is a beautiful way to live your best life and feel your best self. there are some amazing books out there. I'm not naming any of them, okay, but there are some amazing books that give you the herbal remedies or tell you give you a list of conditions and then you can see what herbal supplements or blends can really work to help your body heal and potentially reduce the amount of medications that you're on. Now consult with your doctor. If you ask your doctor or you say to your doctor, hey, I really don't want to be on medication for the rest of my life. Can you give me information on some holistic ways to reduce whatever that condition is? If it's inflammation, if it's pain. typically your doctors have access to this information, too. Unfortunately, they don't always give you that information on first visit.
Speaker 1 00:14:31 Right? So check in for your specific wellness needs with your physician. Ask for some alternative health options. So I know I just kind of listed off some stuff for you. Now let me tell you how to use it. Right. Because having all that information and having no idea how to implement it in life. Yeah. What do you do with that? So my favorite way to use all of the herbs I've just listed is in T. I have a couple options for you. You can literally go into the store and buy these t blends, right? if you're in your grocery store and you go to the T aisle, you will see a variety of teas by the ingredients in them. Okay. Now, my preferred way of drinking a tea is going to my local health store. in Greensboro, I have deep roots in Goldsboro. I have health habit. There are thousands of health stores, right? I like to know the people in the stores where I get my herbs. So I go in, I get my herbs.
Speaker 1 00:15:44 I'm like, hey, this. Hey. And and if you don't remember what herbs I told you, if you're going into a local store, I promise you, someone there knows what the things do and how to help. You can ask someone that works there. They're usually pretty nice. So you go in, you say, these are the things I need and you can ask for tee ball. there are a couple different types of tee ball. Some of them are like spoons, like the salad spoons from Olive garden with the squeezy things where you open it, you get the salad and you put it in the bowl. Yeah, some of them are like that. They're really neat. You pinch them and then you put it in your hot water and you let it steep. steeping is when you put your herbs in the hot water and let them sit, right. some things take a little longer than others to state. Usually you can smell it. the rule for most of the things is at least five minutes.
Speaker 1 00:16:51 If you like a stronger flavor, you might want to let it sit there a little longer. If you kind of just you just want a little a little accent. Five minutes is probably enough. Okay. But you can play with that. It's the benefit of having it at home is you can figure out what works for you the best. Okay, so I get my, my tea blend, for my bloating or my digestion issues. That would probably be my lemon ginger. I like peppermint in everything, so I throw peppermint in most of my teas. Okay. You can do that too. It's fine. Peppermint has some digestive benefits as well. Okay, drop it in there. Let it steep for five minutes. Ten minutes. Typically, I don't go over ten minutes. both because it gets really strong, especially if you have ginger in it. And because I'm ready to drink my tea. Okay. I am a honey girl. You can use any sweetener you want. I choose honey because honey also has health benefits.
Speaker 1 00:18:02 Okay. And it's it's great for people with allergies. So that that's my go to. Alright. Once the tea has sat for about five, ten minutes, I will stir it with the tea ball. Okay. It's essentially a spoon that's closed. It's a big circle on the end of a handle. You can stir your cup. Okay. Once you take that out, let your tea cool off to whatever temperature you drink your tea. Okay. If you drink your tea piping hot, go ahead and add your honey. Now, if you let your tea cool off, wait until your tea is cooled some and then add your honey. Why do we let our tea cool before we. We drink it or add our honey in, because the heat from the dog near boiling water can break down some of the important, components of the honey so that it doesn't have the same beneficial impact. Right. So we're going to do that. And then we're going to have a nice cup of tea. All right.
Speaker 1 00:19:11 Now if you're one of those people who's like, I don't need a tea ball. I have tea bags at home or you're choosing to purchase the tea bags. That is perfect. Okay. You still put that bag in there, you get your spoon and you let it seep, and then you stir it up. The reason I like to stir before I take my my herbs out of the cup that I'm drinking my tin is because typically there is either flavor or nutrients that is in the bag that just has been sitting there and has it fully entered your water, or because it's all sitting at the bottom of the cup. So if I stir it while the herbs are still in there, I'm checking both boxes. Okay, if you're using something with more bitter herbs i.e. turmeric, turmeric is not the sweetest herb. I personally don't mind the bitter, so I squeezed my herbs. Right? If you do not like bitter, you're either going to not want to squeeze it, or you're going to need to know that it's going to be a little bitter.
Speaker 1 00:20:23 So drink it like a shot or add a little extra honey. Okay. or whatever sweetener you choose to use. Now for the supplements that you're using once you find them in store. I, I am very blessed to have some amazing people that work in my local Whole Foods or not Whole Foods, but my local health stores where I get to ask all the questions and they are very informed. Okay, once you go in and you say, hey, this is a supplement that I think would be helpful for the condition I'm suffering with or, hey, this is the thing I'm suffering with. Can you help me find something that will help the issue? There are distractions. There are instructions on that bottle for you. Okay. So take a look. Read it. all of these things that you're going to buy are going to say something along the lines of check with your medical provider, right? Because we as humans, in the day to day do not know what conditions you are dealing with and we don't know what medications you are taking, and that does not mean that you should come to us with an entire list of your medications, okay? Because we are still not pharmacists and we are still not your primary care physician.
Speaker 1 00:21:52 So go check with one of them so that you get the best information for you. And if you feel like neither one of those people is going to give you the information you need, check your area for a holistic medical provider. They are out there. We just don't always know that we have the option to look for them. And I hope that you have found something wonderful that helps with some issue that you're having now. You heard the issue. You have a supplement that or or an herb that could help. I'm charging you to call your doctor. Talk to your physician and implement that thing and see how it feels. The benefit of herbal supplements, of herbal remedies. The benefit of those things is that largely for the most part, there aren't side effects unless you're allergic to it. If you don't know what you're allergic to, that's a different story altogether. Friends. But if you know and you're trying something new, then you have the ability to heal your body naturally and use some of those beautiful plants that God blessed us with for food and for medicine.
Speaker 1 00:23:14 I am so excited to hear from you and hear all of the things that you have learned or tried in your wellness journey. And hey, if I didn't mention something and it was a part of your healing journey, I would love to hear about it. Thank you so much for joining us for this episode, and I'll see you on the next one. Bye.
